SPD-SLR is the first ground-up change to Shimano's road pedal interface in a long time, and the PD-R9300 is the Dura-Ace expression of it. The pedal body and the cleat were redesigned together as one system rather than as separate parts, and the headline result is stack height: 2.3mm lower than the outgoing SPD-SL pedal, measured from the axle to the top of the sole. Paired with an S-PHYRE RC910 shoe the total drops to 17.4mm.
Lower stack puts the ball of your foot closer to the axle, which is worth having for two reasons. The connection feels more direct because there is less material to flex between foot and axle, and the shoe sits into the pedal rather than on top of it, so the cleat and body mate with no gap and no wobble under a hard effort.
Getting in is easier too. The cleat catch is wider and the pedal hangs at a narrower angle, 10.9° rather than 15.5°, so the entry angle you have to find is 4.6° smaller and the pedal is where you expect it when you stamp down. Walking is better as well, because the rear section of the cleat is thinner. And the whole thing is 18g lighter than the pedal it replaces.
Carbon composite body on a Dura-Ace axle, sold as a pair, cleats sold separately. Also available with a 4mm longer axle for riders who need extra stance width.
