Ultegra Di2, carbon wheels and a one-piece carbon cockpit put the 8000 within touching distance of a team bike. The parts that shape how a road bike feels have all been dealt with, which makes this the build to look at if you race, ride fast group rides or simply want the good version of a lightweight all-rounder.

The frame is the fifth-generation CF3 V carbon Scultura with a matching CF3 Disc carbon fork. It borrows aerodynamic detail from the Reacto while staying committed to low weight, direct handling and the compliance that lets you keep the power on over poor surfaces. Race geometry, internal cable routing, a 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 tapered head tube, a 142 x 12mm rear axle, a Pressfit 86.5 bottom bracket, a flat mount rear brake with Disc Cooler and clearance for 30c tyres.

Shimano Ultegra Di2 gives 12-speed shifting front and rear with a 52-36 chainset and an 11-30 R8101 cassette, which is a race-oriented set of ratios and tight steps where you spend most of your time. Ultegra hydraulic discs do the braking. Reynolds AR 46 DB carbon wheels are 46mm deep with a 21mm inner rim width and arrive tubeless ready with tape and valves included, shod with Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR 28c tyres.

Up front there is a Merida Team one-piece carbon bar and stem with the Team SL headset, which cleans up the cables and sharpens the look of the front end. A Prologo Scratch M5 saddle and a Team SL II 27.2mm carbon seat post finish it off. Very little on this bike asks to be changed.
