The Cane Creek Hellbender 70 sits between the 40-series and the 110-series, and it borrows far more from the latter than the price suggests. You get the same design, the same sealing system and the same Hellbender bearings found in the brand's flagship headset, for money much closer to a 40-series.

Those bearings are the reason to buy one. Low-friction seals keep grit and water out without adding drag, so the steering stays smooth through a British winter rather than going notchy by February. The cups are machined from 6061 T-6 aluminium and topped with an alloy dual seal crown race, and the internals are cross compatible with the 10, 40 and 110-series, so servicing down the line is simple.

This is the ZS44/28.6 - EC44/40 fitment, with an 8mm upper stack and a 12mm lower stack. Check the S.H.I.S. standard stamped on your frame before ordering, and pick from six anodised finishes.
