When a pad wears out, the pad rarely does. Far more often it's the insert inside it, a hard cap that's taken one rock too many, or a buckle that's given up — and replacing that one part costs a fraction of replacing the whole guard. Fit matters more here than anywhere else in protection, because an insert that doesn't sit properly in its sleeve won't protect you properly either.
