As someone who is tall and heavier than I should be I looked to purchase a bike that was strong and with good stopping power. I've had my Flyer just over 8 months and it has been excellent. I purchased some full length mudguards and they've allowed me to keep using the bike over the winter months. I've lost 20 lbs since the beginning of the year and I'm regularly cycling 30 miles a day. I swapped out the handlebar for something wider (Surly Truck Stop) and changed the saddle for a more personal item. I was concerned that the Maxxis Detonater tyres wouldn't be up to the same standard as my favourite Marathons but I've had no issues. I cycle a lot. I think this is an excellent bike and great value for money.

I bought this as a basis for a new commute bike for winter/ bad weather use and after a couple of months use I think it is going to be fine. Good value. I expect to upgrade some components in the first year or so. Have already had a new front wheel built with hub dynamo. Plenty of clearance for tyres left even after adding ‘guards. There are more mounting points that I expect to use- but maybe I'll take it on tour one day- who knows, it's capable of so much more than getting me to work. Hope to update with a long term test in 10 years!

I'm enjoying my Genesis Flyer which I've now been using for a couple of weeks. I've notched up a couple hundred miles. Some out of the box issues to look at straight away would be to tighten all the allen key bolts. I greased mine too. Also the crank arms. They were making a grinding sound and I thought I'd need to replace the bottom bracket but tightening the crank arm bolts rectified the issue. The Allen key fixing bolt holes on the rear stays are 5mm not 4mm.

My previous review still stands, I'm well pleased with the 'Flyer' overall however, I've deducted a star for the following reason;
A few rides in and I felt at times that I was trying to ride through treacle. Close inspection of the supplied Taiwanese freewheel, showed grease oozing out of the gaps and and a resistance to forward momentum. Further 'on line' investigation led to poor reviews of this particular freewheel. Its cheap and clearly built to a price point. With only one speed on this bike, I'd hoped Genesis would have spec'd something better. ( Have emailed Genesis about this but received no response).
Anyway, swapped this freewheel for a Halo 'clickster' and it has transformed the ride, no more treacle effect and a great whirring sound when freewheeling. It was another £50+, but worth it. Also swapped front chainring for a Surly 38 tooth, which gives me a better cadence for gravel surfaces. Found the supplied 42 tooth OK for road but not as flexible off. Hope this helps others considering a purchase.
