If you're looking to make the move from your trusty backpack, and join the lumbar pack movement, the Dakine Hot Laps 5L is a great way to do that. It comes with a squat 2L, lumbar-shaped hydration reservoir, and still has plenty of space to stow all the gear you're used to having on hand for your rides. The cargo pocket of the Hot Laps 5L features organisation for a phone, tools, food, and a light shell. Lower straps untuck to hold any bulky knee pads while side compression straps keeps the load close as you empty your water, and the breathable AirFlow back panel does away with the hotspots and "pack sweat" you're used to pedalling through.

Features:

  • 2L / 70oz Hydrapak® lumbar reservoir
  • Phaser bite valve
  • Magnetic buckle auto-locates hydration hose
  • Breathable Air Flow backpanel
  • Internal organizer pockets
  • External attachment straps
  • Side compression
  • Safety light attachment

So far, a great bag.

A few thought's on my new Dakine Hot laps 5L (in orange which is a great colour!)

I hate wearing a bag of any type as it just gives me a horrible hot sweaty back, and for my local loops I'm never that far away from home to need one but for longer stuff I really could do with a few bits, just in case. No one wants a 10 mile walk home so I looked around to see what was out there in the hip pack world. I liked the look of the Evoc which wins all the tests but at £90 od its a lot of money if I don't get on with it infact, its a lot of money for q tiny bag period. So the Dakine hot laps found its way on to my radar based on good looks, good size and spec and it seemed to be well thought of in reviews.

Ride impressions based on a few 30 mile rides is very positive. It takes a bit of time to fo get it in the right place, for me I had to have a bit further up my back than I thought so I could get it nice and secure. I had it loaded up with a spare tube, pump, CO2 head and a couple of cartridges, multitool, 2 tyre levers and a wallet sized back of tubless repair stuff, patches, tyre boot etc. I still had some room for a couple of energy bars and some jelly beans but not much more than that. Initially I filled up the bladder but as I suspected, its not really very usable at full capacity, the bladder is too big and it wont conform to your back so wont fit very securely. It just kind of rolls about a little. You could do 2 litres if you carried nothing else but around the 1 litre mark and the fit was great maybe 1.5 if things are in just the right place. On the ride (which was tame gravel double track largely with a couple of mildly bumpy descents) the bag was secure and comfy and I'm fairly sure I could take it on some tasty tracks with it staying put. Comfort is very good, it gets hot where it is as you might expect but still miles better than a full pack.

There are a few little bits that could be tweeked to improve it further, a hose that is detachable at the reservoir would be handy but its not a deal breaker and a couple of extra tightening straps from the waist band to the top part of the bag would also be good but again, this can be mitigated with carefull packing and positioning.

Overall I'm pleased with it. Does exactly what I hoped it would, carries just enough stuff, is comfy and secure and costs a sensible amount.

I like it.
